I've just found the time to write about my experience of doing a documentary......it's taken a week to put things back in order as a result of leaving for a week. Whew!!! Cleaning all the dust and putting the gear back in it's right place is enough......I was so concerned about the gear I left my clothes on the luggage carousel at the airport....I had to go back the other day!!! It's comical to me.....but thank god it wasn't gear. We had 5 people go.....3 crew and 2 friends. Their Carry on capability helped out a lot.....since we had bag after bag of stuff.

The Super 8 mm material I shot was mostly done in the morning and evening during golden hour(s). I shot a Fancy Dancing competition at the Pow Wow as well.....it's all nice stuff. I shot 5 rolls.....the 5th roll had a jam.....par for the coarse I guess. I bought some tri-x to shoot at night but it's not acceptable to shoot a ceremonial fire with photographic equipment....so that's all right. I shot some rodeo footage from several different points and I mixed it up with wides, mediums, and tights.....there was a lot of dust kicking up during some of the shots along with a sunset to backlight the horses and riders.....really nice stuff. One shot had a bull hit the fence I was on and the horse with the rider on it hit right after the cow hit.....so I got some interesting stuff on that shot. I dropped the film off a few days ago.....so I'm looking forward to getting it back soon enough.

My camera Sony DSR 300A didn't come to the dealer on time for me to take it on the trip so the dealer set me up with a Panasonic 200 DVCPRO camera with 2/3 inch chips....nice piece but no audio meters at the rear only in the viewfinder....it was heavy to carry as well. It had nice glass though 20X lens which came in handy. That footage came out nice.....but could have been nicer since the Sony has a function to adjust high contrast so you don't lose out as much.....film there would be worries....but it turned out all right. We had Anton Bauer Power as well.....nice little Nickel Metal Hydride batteries....light and they take a quick recharge.

Our XL-1 was the super star......we shot in the frame mode (closest to film as it's gonna get) and it really was nice. We used a Black Pro-Mist filters to really give it a look. The focus on the camera is not the best being that it's electronic....but it really gives a feel with the frame mode and the filter. We bought along the EF adapter for using 35mm lenses on the camera but we didn't use it since it effectively quadrupled the zoom of the lens that you put on it......which was not what we were looking for for interviews.....it would be nice for long distance nature shots though....maybe next time.

Our DP's boyfriend is a chef so we ate nicely......he made his own spit and smoked up some meat for us with a mixture of wood and served it up after we poured ourselves into our camp chairs at days end. Nice guy. He also stepped into the kitchen during the Pow Wow and cooked for a couple hundred people for the sake of it.....he loves to cook. A shoot goes well when your belly is full that's for sure.

We had a good time and established a lifelong relationship in the process.......Now it's time to get everything together for Post......We might be going back in October.....but we'll see what time has in store for us.

    Excellent shoot.

    Peace and Light,

Broadcast on Public Television and/or Mainstream(History, Discovery Channel, Learning Channel, Lifetime) It's hard to pigeon hole it. We have interest from a Canadian Station for a project and when we are done we may submit it there. I really believe in it and have self funded this project with all my heart since it has touched my soul. We have researched this project for years and built upon contacts and had to do a lot of introspection in order to be invited to do it in the 1st place. Speaking your truth to a large number of people in a public place certainly helps....since you never know when you'll be called upon to speak.

I certainly hope there are more people that feel the same way....we certainly feel that people are looking for something within themselves and in others in order to bring meaning to their lives. Good messages and responsible documenting of the facts and feelings of people are what viewers want today I feel.
